Our largest annual event takes place in just two weeks! On July 20-22, we’ll host our ninth annual Civil War encampment weekend here.
James A. Garfield NHS was recently designated a site on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, so our theme for this year’s encampment is the Underground Railroad. We have so much great content for this year’s event, including first person interpreters appearing as U.S. Grant, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, several of “Lincoln’s Generals,” William Lloyd Garrison, Sojourner Truth, Mary Lincoln, Lucretia Garfield, and many others!
We’ll also have Union and Confederate reenactors, British observers, infantry and artillery demonstrations, indoor speakers, numerous kids’ activities, and so much more! The event begins at 7 p.m. on Friday night, July 20, when our friends at the Northeast Ohio Civil War Round Table host their annual speaker symposium in our auditorium. Speakers this year will be National Park Service Rangers/authors Matt Atkinson and Dan Vermilya. This symposium is free and open to the public!
The entire Civil War encampment weekend and all associated activities are free of charge!

General Grant hopes you will see fit to join him at this event at the wonderful James A. Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor, Ohio!
